Ingredients
  

For the cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil or any neutral flavored oil
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract optional
  • 1 cup hot black coffee *see notes

For the frosting

  • 1.5 cups cocoa powder
  • 6 cups powdered sugar
  • 1.5 cups unsalted butter softened to room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract optional
  • 10-12 tablespoons milk

Instructions
 

  • Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl and whisk to combine.
  • Mix wet ingredients in the center of dry ingredients, gradually combining to form a thick batter.
  • Add hot coffee to the batter and whisk until smooth and thin.
  • Pour batter into prepared pans and bake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes.
  • Prepare frosting by combining cocoa powder, powdered sugar, and butter, then gradually add milk until smooth.
  • Assemble and frost the cake, then slice and serve.

Notes

For a more intense chocolate flavor, use high-quality cocoa powder and ensure all ingredients are at room temperature before mixing.
